10 most influential style tastemakers in Nigerian pop culture (Pt. 1)

In honor of VideoWheels’ very first Afro beat power list, we’ve decided to share our own rendition, highlighting 10 of the hottest, most stylish and fashion-savvy people of the moment in Nigerian pop culture. These are the tastemakers dominating the industry and pushing the culture forward… the ones you see everywhere doing everything – and doing it well.

Below is the first batch of 10 most-influential artists that made the list (in no particular order).

Rapper extraordinaire and TV actor, Falz Thebahdguy

Being the son of one of the most respected lawyer in Nigeria, you can image the surprise of his family when he decided to go into music.  Now a few years down the line, Falz is gradually becoming an international act both in the music, movie and fashion industry.

The rapper has a very unique sense of fashion style which is both formal and casual at the same time.

Wizkid on Vogue magazine in February 2016

Ayo Balogun is pretty much the biggest thing in Nigerian pop. Overtime he has become an international star out of Africa and he has the sense of style to match.

In February 2016, the Starboy was named Nigeria’s best dressed pop star by international fashion magazine, Vogue. Guess that boosts his resume over (not just Nigeria) but other African pop acts.

According to Wizkid in his Vogue interview; “Growing up in Lagos, I wasn’t fortunate enough to get the fresh stuff when it was new. There was this place we used to go to find stuff that had been shipped from America, like secondhand clothes. I used to rock a lot of Reebok, just a lot of sporty stuff”.

Timaya is unarguably one of the most best dressed male celebs in Nigeria.

Much as we rate most of our celebs as the best dressed or whatever form of fashion icon we must have labelled them – I bet most of the time we forget to mention Timaya – or do we?

Do you follow him on Instagram? You should, seeing as the self-styled Egberi Papa 1 has proven overtime that he’s actually one of the best-dressed entertainers in Africa.

Tiwa Savage

Afro diva, Tiwa Savage

The singer has overtime become one of the most stylish women in the entertainment industry.

From music and fashion to making black look extremely sexy on magazine covers, the eminado sweetheart has a simple, classy and sweet sense of style which translates in her every day look whether on a casual day out or to an event. She is extremely versatile, because her risky and edgy sense of style comes out fully when she performs on stage in jaw dropping outfits that leave the crowd wowed.

D’banj is not about to leave the pace for these new skool cats

You know him well – the king of “Kokolets.” Steady dropping ‘sauce’ dripping photos on Instagram, appearing in commercials and/or attending an award show near you. D’banj has over the years inspired a generation of artistes across Africa, with not just his music, but his sense of style.

While artistes were rocking the norm which were; latest kicks, T-Shirts, tailored jeans, D’Banj made it sexy and appealing to wear suits as an entertainer in Naija.

Best believe it!

Patoranking is steady making statements with his fashion sense.

Not only has his music grown, his sense of style has grown as well. From the rough looking Ghetto boy with dyed brown hair to the sleek dapper looking, well-groomed and very sexy young man, Patoranking’s transformation has been very amazing.

Whether he’s on a suit or native attire, the perfect fitting cut on his slender body is always a delight to behold. Patoranking is a brand ambassador for TLR Couture, a bespoke fashion outlet in Nigeria.

You may not like him and his fashion style, but Kcee is a perfect example of ‘Not minding the Nay Sayers’

Kcee has stock on our timelines thanks to his risque looks over the years. He calls himself ‘Nigeria’s fashion icon’ and he tries to live up to that self-title. The governor aspirant wears them all and at every occasion tags a huge smile and confidence to his outfits. Whether you love him or not, you won’t and can’t avoid his fashion choices.

This is not a musical chart and Tekno does not need to make this list because of his ability to churn out one hit song after the other. Rather it’s for his clean looks and his very smart dress sense. Checkout his photos. Which one doesn’t look cool?

Ice Prince

Overtime Ice Prince has showed us he’s the king of Urban styles.

Ice Prince Zamani is that hip hop star who doesn’t have the ability to not look good. He mixes things up and has often times greatly combined traditional and Western cultures brilliantly on his skin. On or off stage, Ice rocks some of the best foot wears and should we remind y’all that he loves shades so much he created his own brand?

Bank W

Who else doesn’t like what they see.

Singer and songwriter, Banky W has been in the game for two things, make money and let people see it on you. Everywhere he goes, his style speaks volumes. Despite ditching his hats two years ago, Banky still pulls through with his outfits and steady giving these new guys a run for their money. From simple tees to the most rock-able suits, Banky is that one guy who never stops experimenting with his style.

Next list coming real soon.
